Belt power sander is perfect for large areas.

Disc sander will work for smaller surfaces.

A type of firm and fine sanding paper is what I am using, but still depends on the type of surface you will use. Mostly I am doing it for outdoor furniture like this http://www.javateakoutdoorfurniture.com/products/benches/ then finishes it with a glaze solution or a varnish will do.

Different disc sander can be use for this and in fact I used Bosch sander for my old door that I bought many years ago at http://caldwells.com/exterior-doors/front-doors.

I too agree with Jim. It will be the best. Try it.
