My children’s furniture is made of plastic and it works well for them.  It’s inexpensive and easy to clean. 🙂

You can also try crackle-finish medium that should be applied over the base coat.

The simplest way is to buy texture premix at the store and mix this with your paint.  There some nice textures available like sand, stone, and popcorn.  I’ve tried popcorn and I really like how it looks on my walls.
